Five years ago Reese Witherspoon bought a historic ranch in the hills of Ojai. The ranch, built in 1923, sits on seven acres that includes a pool, a barn, guest cottages, and a horse paddock that houses her Friesian horse and her chestnut pony.
Brick and stucco walls, Spanish tiles, exposed beams, extravagant iron light fixtures, and other original architectural elements have been and are well preserved in Reese's ranch. To put her own touches on the property Reese worked with interior designer Kristen Buckingham to incorporate European antiques, rustic accessories, and custom-designed upholstery.
Landscape designer Jay Griffith said "Reese is a Southern belle and wanted something poetic and feminine. I tried to capture the ethereal quality you see in plein-air paintings, the mythical California of Ojai, Bel Air, and Carmel-by-the-Sea." So, he added a gravel driveway and courtyard as well as large patches of fragrant lavender, jasmine, roses, and Mexican sage.
Reese calls the magical home, which serves as her family's weekend and holiday escape, "meditative and restorative." I can see why.
